Why Is Natural Fibres The Better Choice? Here's 5 Reasons

Read Time: 1m 40s

Textiles is made from fibres that are either natural or man-made and within natural fibres, they can be made from plant, vegetable, or animal sources.

Here are 5 reasons why choosing natural fibres is better for you and our environment.

1. Natural Fibre is Renewable and Sustainable

Being natural, it is a renewable source and can be grown organically if we choose to.
Most natural fibres are biodegradable, unlike man made fibres which means they can decompose harmlessly.

2. Natural Fibre is Breathable

Fabric made from natural fibre prevents heat from being trapped in between the fabric and the skin due to it absorbency. This allows it to be highly permeable, letting excess heat to pass through the fabric so it can keep you dry making it a healthier choice for your skin.

3. Natural Fibre Feels Good

Natural fibre feels comfortable against the skin and is suitable for people who may have sensitive skin, it is also highly recommended for babies and young children since they can't regulate their body temperature and therefore should wear fabrics against the skin that is breathable.

4. Reducing Toxins Means a Happier Body

Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs what it comes in contact with. Wearing natural fibre against the skin is a better choice as it is what nature intended, and being natural, it's likely it goes through less processing compared to man made fibres.

To further reduce toxins, it is also important to shop certified. What does this mean? Not all fabric are made equal, it is important to shop certified fabrics as this means companies have put their fabrics through extra testing to ensure it is safe for human wear and does not contain harmful toxins which can be present in some dyes.

5. Does Not Pollute The Ocean

Being natural, even if tiny fibres happens to shed from washing and end up in the ocean it will biodegradable naturally unlike synthetic fibres. Unfortunately synthetic fibres is known to shed tiny strands of fibre with every wash, which end up in our ocean and is a main contributor to plastic pollution.

I'm passionate about giving Australian sewists the choice of certified natural fibres at Wicked Fabrics so you can live up to your commitment to sewing sustainably as well.
